Valuable Notes on Emotional Intelligence Video
What became of your high school's valedictorian? If IQ determined what you achieved in life then more valedictorians would be CEOs. Instead, the CEO may be someone who really listened, who you felt comfortable with, someone you wanted to spend time with.
We need courses in our schools on emotional literacy. We need to teach our children to train their emotional circuits.
How To's with Emotional Intelligence:
1. Monitor Yourself (What triggers me?)
2. Find a model (Someone who handles situations well.)
3. Be aware of the signals in your body that tell you you're getting "hijacked" (wound up very high emotionally).
4. Short circuit the hijack when it's building (NOT after).
5. Repeat steps 1-4 over and over and over again until it becomes automatic to you (internalized).
6. When you blow it, forgive yourself.
Five Components of Emotional Intelligence
1. Self-Awareness: Listen to your feelings and thoughts. Combine your intuition with the facts. Know your values (what really matters to you). What is truly fulfilling for you.
2. Self-Control: How well do you handle your destructive impulses? Handle your impulses well because they are the key to integrity and responsibility. Conscientious people are prized.
3. High Motivation: Strive to improve your performance and achieve.
4. Empathy: This is the ability to recognize how people are feeling. Trust requires empathy.
5. Social Skills: How well do you handle relations including conflict?
