Week 6...Cultural Diversity
1) Hand in homework. Questions, comments?
2) Beautiful job on dialogues! Accurate, entertaining, useful, e.g. "how to" no smoking signs, buying, lines, helping others, romance, visiting people's homes, taking a taxi, it's OK to pee on a campfire (and evidently behind a box off the road during Mondiale), and many others.
3) new vocabulary: sababa, embrara, haval al asman, ahalan ("I'm Mark"?), balagan gadol. Amos Oz quote in Elsewhere Perhaps, 1966.
4) At the halfway point (feels like a lifetime...you too?...take a break, a breather, relax, enjoy the summer; homework will resume next week.
5) Next quiz to be decided.
6) Final Project Ideas: Example: "What is Israel?" (work in progress)
Cultural aspects of settling the galaxy:
Leave as plundering Vikings?
As Moses left (a group of families bound together by faith and their willingness to risk their lives?
As Amazonian teams of women-lighter and more cooperative than men-waiting for the right moment to impregnate themselves using an on-board sperm bank? (BTW, women almost never murder each other…less given to hierarchical social structures, breathe less, exhale less, and eat less than men...)
As stone age Polynesians, launching themselves off the edge of the known world?
“If you want to conquer the world, you need an organization like the Roman legion. If you want to manufacture linen, you need an organization like a nunnery. If you want to colonize space, you need families.
Also, with your acquired cross-cultural skills could you communicate effectively with extraterrestrials? Interesting final project?
Another idea: Write some judging statements Americans, Israelis, French, British may make about people from other cultures.
Powerpoint samples and ideas for your final project if you wish. New foreign policy and online economics powerpoints.
Take some time to brainstorm in your groups...in a few weeks I will ask you for an outline and who's doing what.
